Dry Eyes

The condition where no sufficient tears to lubricate or nourish eye, called as dry eye. Our tears are useful for maintain the health of the front surface of eye and to clear the surface in order our eye clear to see. Dry eye is common and often chronic problem, particularly in older adults people.


Tear of eye is useful to lubricate, reduce risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye, and keep the surface of eye smooth and clear. Excess tears in the eyes will flow into small drainage ducts, in the corner of eyelids, which drain in the back of the nose. Tears are produced by several glands in around the eyelids. Tear production tends to diminish with age, with various medical conditions, or as a side effect of certain medicines. Environmental condition such as wind and dry climates can also affects tear volume by increasing tear evaporation.

Tear of eye contains of oil, water, and mucus. A smooth oil layer help to prevent evaporation of the water layer. The most common source of dry eyes is due to inadequate amount of water layer on eyes surface. This condition called as keratoconjuctivities sicca (KCS), which is also referred as dry eye syndrome.

People with dry eyes will feel sick in the eye, this may a symptom of irritated, gritty, scartchy or burning eyes, a feeling of something in their eyes, excess watering, and blurred vision. At advanced condition dry eyes may damage the front surface of the eye and impair vision.
